[fwlug] getting wireless card to work

Hi there,
I am a linux newbie and recently installed ubuntu onto a Toshiba laptop (Satellite P25-S607). I have a couple questions about a Netgear WPN511 PCMIA card that worked under Windows to connect wirelessly to my router at home. Initially, the card did not work. But after a bit of internet research and trial and error, I am able to get the card to work, but not automatically. That is, when I first boot up, the card does not work, until I use the Terminal program and enter the following lines:
sudo ifdown ath1
sudo ifup ath1
After those two commands, the wireless card works. How do I set up the computer so that I don't have to manually type in those two commands? Can someone explain what is going on and why is it that these two commands are able to get the card to work?

Thanks,
Eugene Tsai
